Brown Oak Stool

A carefully hand-crafted brown oak stool with carved seat and cleft ash legs.

This is a charming piece, made from exquisite brown oak. Brown oak is English oak (Quercus Robar) which has been infected by the beefsteak fungus (fistulina hepatica). This common disease in oak streaks through the tree, and stains the oak a delicious chocolate brown before eventually killing it off. The result is a highly desirable material with the characteristics of English oak, but with the exotic colouring. This particular piece came from a wind-blown tree growing on the Gorloffen Estate just outside Yealmpton. The seat is carved for comfort, and the ash legs flare gently towards the ground, giving a sense of presence and stability to the piece.
