Introduction to Steam Bending
This two-day introduction to steam bending opens up creative possibilities for woodworkers.
With some simple inexpensive equipment you can start bending wood, and open up a world of creativity. This course will give you a thorough understanding of the almost magical art of steam bending, and the confidence to take on projects on your own.
We will cover all aspects of steam bending - theory and practice.
On day one you will learn how to select timber, make formers and setting jigs, and see different methods of steam box construction. We will carry out 2d, 3d composite bends and twists, and experiment with different timber species. We will look at the difference between unsupported and supported bends.
On day two, using some of the components we made on day one, you will choose a project to make and will take away a few simples products, and a finished piece of furniture. More importantly you will take away the skills and knowledge to apply steam bending to your projects at home. If you have a particular project in mind let us know and we will try to accomodate you. This course has developed over the past two years - people bring their own ideas and we design, prototype, and problem-solve.
The course fee covers all materials - just bring your lunch, and an open mind.
